For this project we were tasked with creating a display typeface as well as a specimen/booklet that would show off our typeface, and get people to download it. The overall specimen is in a 1920x1080 pdf and is 14 pages long. In the specimen I talk about my inspiration and process of creating my typeface SHOELACE. If you’d like to see a more in depth process you can check out my Dropmark here. To see my specimen for my typeface keep scrolling.
One of the words I would use to describe my typeface is imaginative. Above I have arrows pointing to parts of the letterforms that I think show how the typeface is imaginative. The loops that are formed inside and outside of the letters show how they were created in an imaginative way. I also point to the blank center of the letters which can be filled in however the user wants, wherever their imagination takes them.
Instead of starting with drawing my letterforms I started by making them with a shoelace.
To draw out my letterforms I used procreate. At the top of this photo is the first drawings of what SHOELACE would look like. As you go down the lines in the photo you’ll see how the letters evolved to their final form, which is the last line.
After drawing my letterforms I put them in illustrator to refine them and make the loops bigger, making them easier to read and see when scaled down. After this they were placed into glyphs and finalized.
Here is the complete character set for SHOELACE.
Here are some examples of my type face in use. They also show a couple of ways people can use SHOELACE, and how diverse it can be.
